I first wrote about Hamda Al Fahim last year. I’d not heard of the designer before I discovered her Autumn/Winter 2015 collection. The 2015 collection, inspired by chinoiserie and peacock feathers, consisted of floor-sweeping tulle gowns, delicate appliqués, embroideries, and unique hand-painted designs.
Now the Emirati designer has another fabulous collection for Fall/Winter 2016. Showcased in March at Arab Fashion Week, the collection of swoon-worthy gowns was inspired says Hamda Al Fahim, “by the airy grace and fluid beauty of fairies.” The concept was then brought to life by using delicate materials like tulle, chiffon georgette, organza, silk, and faille.
“Our color palette was drawn from nature,’ says Al Fahim, “we observed how pastel colours of the sky softly shift and blend into one another, resulting in a subtle transition of colors – such the sunset or a rainbow. Lavender, pale yellow, blush rose, light peach, pistachio, and melon were incorporated in our pieces.”
To add texture, different materials such as handmade organza and chiffon flowers for appliqué, as well as ruffled plissé tulle, and different shades of lavender feathers were used. The silhouette for this collection is flowy and fluid. “Cascading long tulle sleeves, bell sleeves, gathered sleeves – we explored the draping around the shoulder and arms to illustrate the fluidity of the dresses,” says Al Fahim “We also experimented with various pleating techniques around the body.”
